Jay Bruce on trade rumors: ‘I’m a Red until I’m not’

Jay Bruce stopped playing the “game” of baseball a long time ago. The Reds right fielder knows it’s a business now and he’s been a big part of that the last 24 hours.

“I try not to read too much into it, but I’m a human being,” Bruce told reporters Tuesday. “I start asking some questions and wondering some stuff when it all goes down.

A trade to the Blue Jays fell through late last night but it's no secret the club would still like to hand his salary over to another team … perhaps before the season begins in April.

“I’ve said a lot of times that the Reds are doing what they can to try and improve the organization,” he said. “If they feel that’s a move they need to make and me being involved in it then it is what it is.”

Bruce reported to camp two days early and went through his physical like the rest of the position players Tuesday. He is determined not to let his personal issues affect they team.

“I refuse to let my situation and rumors and things being said and me being traded leak over into what’s really important. Until I’m not a Red, I am,” he said.

“Our good fortune is we have a real pro in Jay Bruce who is handling this unbelievably well.” manager Bryan Price said.

“I will treat it as if he is on our team. He is here and I expect him to be our right fielder.”
