Will Bobek hooked up with Ryan Skibinski on a 36-yard strike to get the White team on the board with 36 seconds left in the second quarter. That was set up by an interception by safety Matt Clifford.
The White team got one final chance after the Red team went for it on fourth down and five with 11 seconds before halftime. The play called by the honorary coach was a pass that fell incomplete.
The White team got one final chance and Bobek found a wide open Skibinski for a 33-yard catch and run score to tie the game at 13-13.
Kicker Joseph Bruni came on to boot the game winning extra point through the uprights. Ironically, it was Bruni who missed the second extra point for the Red team that ended up being the difference in the game. Flyer kickers took turns kicking for both teams.
Head Coach Rick Chamberlin made the decision to call the game at halftime as the rain wasn’t letting up.
“I was hoping we could get in at least a half,” Chamberlin said after the game. “The ball was getting very wet and it looked like it was raining harder. We got 53 plays in and I believe almost everybody got to play so for player’s safety and for the fans we decided to call it short.”
The Red team scored two touchdowns in the first quarter, one of those was set up by interception.
Freshman Andrew Holderer, a linebacker who joined the team as a tryout player this spring, intercepted a tipped pass on the Red team’s opening drive. That led to a one-yard touchdown run by Tyler Vincent and a 7-0 lead.
Alex Jeske led the Red team on a long drive for the other score. The senior hit 5-of-7 passes including a nine-yard strike to freshman Steven Fleming for a 13-0 lead.
The Flyers now hit the books for the final two weeks of classes before reporting back for summer camp on August 5th.
Dayton opens the 2018 season at home on Saturday, Sept. 1 against Robert Morris.
