Reds trade starting pitcher

The Cincinnati Reds made a somewhat surprising move Thursday morning by sending Dan Straily to the Miami Marlins for three prospects.

The players headed to Cincinnati are pitchers Louis Castillo and Austin Brice along with outfielder Isaiah White.

Baseball America recently ranked Castillo as the No. 2 prospect in the Marlins organization.

Although club officials have indicated nearly everyone is available for the right price, the move of Straily is somewhat surprising because they had talked of looking forward to having him as a reliable arm that could help them avoid overworking the bullpen.

Now it appears the team will go into spring training with two open spots in the rotation along with Homer Bailey, Anthony DeSclafani and Brandon Finnegan.

According to Baseball America, three of the Reds top four prospects are starters who spent time in Triple-A last year: lefties Cody Reed and Amir Garrett and righty Robert Stephenson.

Reed and Stephenson also pitched in the majors in 2016, though Reed struggled badly and Stephenson was inconsistent.

Garrett has enjoyed a meteoric rise through the system after splitting time between baseball and college basketball early on.
