“It means a lot to win this,” Scott said after carding a two-under 69 on the final day in posting a three-day total of 205.
And, Scott had to smile a little about his 10-stroke win over Craig Harden and Michael Bernard.
“My dad played in this,” Scott said. “He never made the cut. To have him on my bag the final round was really cool, especially when I was winning a tournament he never made the cut in.”
Scott more than won the tournament.
He was the lone golfer in the field to finish under par for the tournament. Bernard and Harden were each 2-over while Pete Betzold, Matt Buse and Ben Hogenkamp tied for fourth at 3-over.
“I figured I had a six-shot lead and I just had to go out and shoot something around par,” Scott said. “Rather I won it or lost it was in my control. I figured a 2-under would be perfect.”
The tournament was originally scheduled for 72 holes, but nearly two inches of rain on Saturday washed away the third round.
“I was up and ready to go and looked out the window and saw it wasn’t the nicest out,” Scott said. “I was sad we didn’t get to play because usually the more golf you play the better golfers come out to the top.”
The big move of the final day came from Wittenberg senior Ben Hogenkamp.
Hogenkamp turned in the low round of the day, 68, to move from a tie for 17th to fourth. Hogenkamp opened the final round with four straight birdies before evening out.
“The first four holes seemed so easy,” Hogenkamp said. “Then I bogeyed sixth and it kind of cooled me off. I was very happy with how I was swinging it. I wanted to get ready to go back to school and this is nice momentum going into this year, especially with it being my senior year.”
Scott was tied for sixth heading into the second day of the tournament before turning in a 64 to push him to the top of the leaderboard.
“My only goal today was trying to get to 10-under,” Scott said. “I didn’t play as well as I wanted to, but 8-under on this course is not bad.”
And, it is good momentum heading into the college season.
“This was a good one to prepare me and get me in a groove,” Scott said. “I want to try and win my first college event this year and getting on a winning streak (heading into school) will be nice.”
