Knucklehead of the Week
Ryan Lochte’s escapades in Rio and his lame apology for his role in creating an international incident are an embarrassment to the USA and green-haired swimmers everywhere. Lochte and three fellow Olympians partied all night last Saturday and stopped at a gas station early the next morning on their way back to the Olympic village. They reportedly broke a door to the bathroom, not realizing they probably had to ask an attendant for a key. Lochte’s version of what happened leaked out after he talked about it, which had to leave his teammates shaking their heads. He should pitch in to help with the fine one of his guys had to pay to get out of Brazil.
I-Team reporter Josh Sweigart dropped in on the awesome Darke County Fair on Friday. I jokingly told him to bring back an elephant ear. A couple hours later he delivered a glob of greasy deliciousness to my desk. Just what our newsroom needed: more sugar!
Congrats to Tri-Village graduate Clayton Murphy on his bronze medal in the 800-meter run in Rio. Murphy's development into a world-class runner should provide incentive for all aspiring Olympians. It's amazing when you consider that he finished seventh over the same distance at the state track meet his senior year.
Now, he did win the Division III 1,600 earlier that day in Columbus, so that’s a rugged double to take on. But still, the six runners who finished in front of Murphy have a great story to tell.
UD's basketball trip to Spain included two "difficult" games against grown men, coach Archie Miller said. But the Flyers have a new grown man of their own in 6-foot-7 Josh Cunningham. The transfer from Bradley recorded double-doubles in both games.
I saw Cunningham and a few of his teammates at Smashburger a few months ago. As he walked out next to Kendall Pollard, I noticed he was taller and wider than his stout teammate. The Flyer Faithful are smiling.
Adele, a singer with a great amount of self-awareness, said last week that she turned down a chance to headline the Super Bowl halftime show. She said she doesn't dance and obviously doesn't like to lip-sync. Next time I watch Skyfall I'll enjoy the theme song knowing Adele didn't sell out.
Chaminade Julienne will play its first football game at the beautiful Roger Glass Stadium on Friday against Marion Local. Downtown bookies have CJ as a 10-point underdog. Glass, who runs Marion's Piazza, should get a standing ovation for his generous donation that helped make the project a reality.
Trending up: Usain Bolt, Michael Lorenzen, Simone Biles. Bolt, who seemingly could win any race running backward, added to his Olympic legend last week with gold medals in the 100 and 200 meters and a relay. Bolt is fun to watch before, during and after the race. He's only 29, so it'll be interesting to see what he does in his 30s. Guessing it'll include Bolt in front of a camera.
Trending down: Patrick Hickey, Izzat Artykov, S.F. Giants. Hickey, the head of the European Olympic Committee, was arrested in Rio for allegedly scalping tickets for the Summer Games. Police found 700 tickets with an associate of Hickey's. They found Hickey in a hotel room after his wife told police that he had gone back to Ireland.
