Boro improved to 1-1, while the Middies dropped to 0-2.
After Middletown drew within 24-20 on the first possession of the third quarter, Mahle completed his next eight passes and led the Panthers on successive third-quarter scoring drives. His final touchdown throw with 7:04 left gave the hosts a 45-20 cushion.
Mahle completed 10 of 12 second-half passes for 114 yards and two touchdowns. For the game, he was 19 of 28 for 269 yards and three touchdowns.
Boro’s offense pounded out 510 yards of offense. A fumbled inside the Middletown 20 nullified one drive and a touchdown was called back due to holding. The outcome could have been worse.
Liam Foley carried 27 times for Boro and had 181 yards and three touchdowns. Tyler Tischer caught six passes for 132 yards and a TD.
Middletown managed 342 yards, but turnovers hurt.
Boro had four second-half interceptions (two by Tischler). Four Middletown second-half possessions went for zero yards.
Middletown junior quarterback Zach Maloney threw 80-yard touchdown passes to Will Thomas and Jaevan Wright. Thomas added another 13-yard touchdown reception. Kicker Cole Smith connected on two field goals (36 and 42 yards).
Maloney completed five straight passes to Thomas on the first drive of the third quarter as Middletown cut the deficit to 24-20 on Maloney and Thomas’ second touchdown connection.
After that, it was all Boro.
The teams combined to run 85 plays in the first half as each team had nine possessions. Of Middletown’s 127 first-half yards, 80 came on Maloney’s first-quarter touchdown bomb to Thomas.
Ten Middletown possessions failed to produce more than 9 yards.
The Middies will host Trotwood-Madison next Friday, while Springboro travels to Winton Woods.
