Scott intercepts two passes, returning one for TD, as Springfield blanks Trotwood-Madison

Junior cornerback scores first touchdown of his career

SPRINGFIELD — Aaron Scott will enjoy the Friday and Saturday night lights this weekend.

The Springfield High School junior cornerback, the fourth-ranked Ohio recruit in the class of 2024, according to Rivals.com, intercepted two passes in a 41-0 victory Friday against Trotwood-Madison. He said after the game he’ll be at Ohio State’s game against Notre Dame on Saturday in Columbus.

Ohio State and Notre Dame are among the many schools recruiting Scott, who has never seen a game in person at Ohio Stadium.

“The atmosphere’s going to be crazy,” he said.

The college coaches will take note of Scott’s first interception in Week 3 of the high school football season. He returned it 27 yards for his first career touchdown.

“I was happy my teammate put me in a position to get to the ball,” Scott said. “It was in the air a long time, and I took it to the crib.”

“I’m happy for him,” Springfield coach Maurice Douglass said of Scott, “because we were on him this week about working hard on every play like they’re coming at you on every play. They came at him, and he made plays when he had the opportunity.”

Springfield, which opened the season with a 29-22 victory against De Smet Jesuit (Mo.) last week in Indianapolis, improved to 2-0.

Trotwood-Madison started 0-3 for the second straight season. It has lost to three teams that have a combined record of 8-0. It opened the season with a 39-16 loss on the road to Winton Woods (3-0) and then lost 38-14 at home to Fairmont (3-0)

Springfield coach Maurice Douglass faced his alma mater and the program he led to a state championship in 2011 for the third time. Trotwood-Madison beat Springfield 34-6 in 2014, Douglass’ first season at Springfield. The Wildcats won 21-20 in 2019.

The teams were scheduled to play last season, but the game was cancelled because of COVID-19 issues.

Scott said the game meant something extra to Douglass because of his connection to Trotwood-Madison, and Douglass said the program is still special to him.

Scott’s touchdown gave Springfield a 21-0 lead early in the second quarter. It was the first play after Zayvion Banks ran seven yards for Springfield’s second touchdown. DayAirion Owens got the Wildcats on the board with a six-yard run on Springfield’s first possession.

Scott picked off another pass in the third quarter, and Springfield extended its lead to 27-0 on the second touchdown run of the game by Owens.

Bryce Schondelmyer threw a 40-yard touchdown pass Daylen Bradley, who had five catches for 102 yards, to give the Wildcats a 34-0 lead late in the third quarter. At that point, with the lead surpassing 30 points, the teams played with a running clock.

Devon Williams caught a 16-yard touchdown pass from Schondelmyer for Springfield’s final touchdown.

Schondelmyer completed 15 of 22 passes for 235 yards in his first home game at Springfield.

“It was awesome,” Schondelmyer said. “This atmosphere, I’ve never played in a game like this.”
