The Basketball Tournament: Red Scare tops Best Virginia to reach semifinals

The Red Scare is two wins away from the $1 million prize in The Basketball Tournament.

The team made up of mostly former University of Dayton players topped Best Virginia, 67-60, in the quarterfinals on Friday night at UD Arena. The Red Scare outscored Best Virginia 8-3 in the Elam Ending and clinched the victory on a free throw by Ryan Mikesell.

Jordan Sibert and Darrell Davis hit 3-pointers during the Elam Ending.

Scoochie Smith led the Red Scare with 17 points and eight assists. Sibert had 12 points. Trevor Thompson had 11 points and seven rebounds. Darrell Davis scored 11.

The Red Scare will play in the semifinals at 6 p.m. Saturday against Blue Collar U, a Buffalo Bulls alumni team. Blue Collar U outscored Heartfire 10-0 in the Elam Ending to win the first quarterfinal 74-66 on Friday.

The first semifinal will match the Wichita State alumni team Aftershocks against Americana for Autism. That game starts at 4 p.m.

The championship game is at 8 p.m. Tuesday.

In the first half Friday, the Red Scare built a 21-13 lead but then gave up a 12-0 run over the next six-plus minutes. Trevor Thompson ended the drought with a short jumper. Then Scoochie Smith tied the game with a jumper at the 1:25 mark.

Ryan Mikesell gave the Red Scare a 6-0 run and a 27-25 lead to end the half with a layup in the final minute.
