Tri-County North High School football coach Bill Derringer said he’s addressed rumors with the team that some players might have ingested stimulants.

Of particular concern was a 26-14 season-opening loss to visiting Brookville. That night multiple lightning delays forced the game to be postponed and completed the next morning, Aug. 27, from 9-11 a.m. Derringer said at least five players suffered from muscle cramps during the game. Two were hospitalized, treated with IV fluids and released.

Game-time temperatures neared 90 degrees that Saturday morning and the heat index soared. One player was affected by cramps during last Friday’s 42-7 defeat of visiting Ansonia.

“Unfortunately, like a lot of small-ball teams, our guys play both sides of the ball,” said Derringer, also the Tri-County North School District superintendent. “We’ve got eight-nine guys who are going both ways and they play special teams. They never leave the field. That plays a big role in cramping up.

“I know there’s a lot of rumors flying around about different things, but there’s nothing substantial. I think at worst we may have had some guys taking ibuprofen-type things after the game.”

TCN, a Division VI football program, is a member of the Cross County Conference and located in Lewisburg off State Route 40. Derringer has been the Panthers’ head coach for a total 13 seasons over three separate stints.

“I did tell (players) make sure you’re not doing anything inappropriate that’s going to hurt yourself or Tri-County North football,” Derringer said. “We’re telling (players) they need to stay hydrated and do what they need to do to stay healthy. Eat right and hopefully that doesn’t happen again.”

Tri-County North (1-1) is at Arcanum (0-2) on Friday.
