Wayne no match for defending D-I state champ MND

The Wayne girls’ bid to keep pace with the Warriors’ highly successful boys basketball team was derailed by Cincinnati Mount Notre Dame 48-28 in a girls Division I district final at Princeton on Saturday afternoon.

It was one of four games. Lakota West ended Fairmont’s season 53-29 and Walnut Hills defeated McAuley 60-57 in the opener. Beavercreek lost 43-34 to Mason in the finale.

MND, the defending D-I state champion, also defeated visiting Wayne 55-45 in the regular season. MND (23-4) will play the Beavercreek/Mason winner in the D-I regional semifinal at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Fairmont’s Trent Arena.

Gabbie Marshall led MND with 15 points. Wayne’s Destiny Bohanon and Maya Dunson each had 10 points.

Wayne upset Springboro 41-30 in a sectional final to advance to this game. The Warriors were guided by former Wayne boys coach Travis Trice, who was in his first season with the Wayne girls.
