West’s Prohaska, Monroe’s Allen headline JN All-Area girls squad

Lakota West’s Abby Prohaska and Monroe’s Chad Allen are the headliners on the 2016-17 Journal-News All-Area prep girls basketball team.

Prohaska, a 5-foot-10 junior guard/forward, is the Player of the Year after leading the Firebirds to a 24-3 record and a share of the Greater Miami Conference title.

She missed several games because of injuries and illness, but averaged 11.4 points, 7.1 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.5 steals per contest.

Prohaska, who has made a verbal commitment to the University of Notre Dame, was a member of the USA Basketball Women’s U17 national team that won a bronze medal at the FIBA U17 World Championship in Spain last July.

Allen is the Coach of the Year after a record-setting season at Monroe, with the Hornets going 20-5 and advancing to the Division II sectional finals.

Monroe set a program record for victories in a season and posted its first winning mark since the 2006-07 campaign.

Last season’s top honorees were Player of the Year Nia Staples of West and Co-Coaches of the Year Kevin Lakes of New Miami and Gideon Dudgeon of Hamilton.
