Where are they now? Fairmont 2013 girls basketball state title team

It's been five seasons since Fairmont High School won a Division I girls high school basketball state championship. Many of those key Firebirds players are still producing at the next level.

Thanks to staff writer Jeremy Kelley for reminding us that team has a special place in Dayton-area high school history. It was the last of four straight trips to the D-I state final four from 2010-13 for Fairmont, all with then-coach Tim Cogan, who's now the boys coach at Carroll.

Fairmont was knocked out in the 2010 state semifinals by Toledo Waite, then lost to nemesis Twinsburg in both the 2011-12 championship games. Fairmont finally defeated Twinsburg 52-48 to win that 2013 title and finish 27-1. Neither team has returned to the D-I state final four since.

Here’s a rundown of how those Fairmont players fared after graduating:

Kathryn Westbeld, 6-2, sr., Notre Dame: Junior on the title team. A four-year fixture in the Irish lineup and three-year starter. Averaging 5.1 points and 4.3 rebounds and an inside enforcer. Has hit double-digit scoring in 34 games. Notre Dame (10-1) is ranked No. 2 in the country and reached the final four in 2015 when Westbeld was a freshman.

Younger sister Maddie Westbeld is a 6-1 sophomore standout at Fairmont.

Chelsea Welch, 5-9, sr., Wright State: Senior on the title team. Will end her career as one of the best in Raiders program history. Transferred to WSU after playing two seasons at Pittsburgh.
