The Dayton Flyers (14-3) will play Northern Iowa (14-12) at noon Friday in Rockford, Ill., in the first round of the Women’s NIT. The 32-team field was announced Monday night.

Northern Iowa finished fourth in the Missouri Valley Conference with an 11-7 mark. It will appear in the NIT for the ninth time. Dayton and Northern Iowa have never played.

Dayton’s NCAA tournament dreams ended when it lost 56-50 in the Atlantic 10 semifinals to Virginia Commonwealth on Saturday. This will be the program’s sixth appearance in the NIT. It also played in the tournament in 2000, 2008, 2009, 2016 and 2019. It is 1-5 in those five appearances.

“Our goals every year are to compete for championships and advance to postseason play,” coach Shauna Green said in a press release. “We’ve been able to do that with 14 straight postseason appearances. It’s a testament to all the great players and their consistency throughout the years. We look forward to being able to compete again in a season where we only played 17 games.”
