The Western and Southern Open field lost some luster Wednesday with the announcement Novak Djokovic won’t be part of the annual tennis tournament at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason.

The world’s No. 1 player and 12-time Grand Slam champion is out because of a left wrist injury.

“I am very sad to announce that I won’t be able to play this year in Cincinnati at the Western & Southern Open,” Djokovic said in a news release. “I have a recurring injury that has taken its toll on my body due to a very busy and active schedule this year. I have played many matches and I have to take some rest in order to heal. I always have my hopes high on returning to Cincinnati and winning the only trophy I am missing in the Masters Series.”

He has 30 victories on the ATP Masters 1000 tour, but the Western and Southern Open will continue to be the only one he hasn’t won for at least one more year.

Defending champion Roger Federer, a seven-time winner in Mason, is not in the field. He’s out for the season rehabbing a knee injury.

The opening round of qualifying for the 2016 tournament begins Saturday.
