Wright State infielder signs as free agent with Giants

Butler High School graduate Damon Dues, who played the last four seasons at Wright State, signed a free-agent contract with the San Francisco Giants on Saturday.

The 6-foot, 180-pound Dues, an All-Horizon League second-team selection in 2021, hit .335 with eight doubles, four home runs and three triples. He tallied 38 RBIs and had a .438 on-base percentage.

Dues was named MVP of the Horizon League tournament. He went 8-for-14 with five RBIs and 10 runs scored and hit for the cycle in the championship game.

Four players from Wright State’s 2021 team will begin their professional careers this summer.

• Second baseman Tyler Black was drafted 33rd overall by the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday.

• The Houston Astros picked outfielder Quincy Hamilton, a Centerville High School graduate, in the fifth round Monday with the 148th overall pick. Hamilton signed with the Astros on Friday.

According to Centerville Athletic Director Rob Dement, Hamilton is the second-highest drafted player in Centerville history and the ninth Centerville graduate drafted.

• The Miami Marlins drafted right-handed pitcher Jake Schrand in the ninth round Monday with the 269th overall pick.
