Also, Tim Barga has stepped down after two seasons as the girls coach. Jack Hatert was promoted from assistant to succeed Barga.
Newsome, a Yellow Springs grad, expects to land an area Division I assistant position. He was Springs’ head coach for 13 seasons and had 182 wins, most in program history.
He cited coaching overload for his departure: Heading junior rec leagues, traveling AAU teams, summer youth camps, open gyms and weightlifting.
“I’m physically and mentally tired,” he said. “If I just could have taken time off I would have done that but that’s not fair to the kids. It was just a lot to juggle. At a small school you end up wearing many different hats.”
Newsome’s teams won four Metro Buckeye Conference titles, the last in 2010. Springs was 15-10 last season. His brothers, Brett and Brian, and cousin Phil Newsome all played in the early 1970s for recently deceased former Bulldogs coach Charlie Coles.
Barga surpassed 500 career wins, most of those at Versailles. Springs was 18-8 last season and tied Troy Christian for the MBC title.
It's an honor: Madison Tolson and Drew Adams have something in common other than being 2013 Middletown Christian grads: Both received the James and Becky Parks Eagle Award.
It’s a charitable scholarship that is annually presented “to the candidate(s) that best exhibit athletic and academic achievement, school spirit, community awareness and involvement and commitment in their church,” according to a release.
Tolson was the volleyball team’s MVP and will pursue nursing at Miami. Adams was most improved in football and basketball. He’ll pursue a pharmacy degree at Cedarville University.
Double duty: New Dayton Christian boys varsity basketball coach Ryan Neises succeeds Mark Coombs on July 1 as DC's athletic director. Neises is a Centerville grad who has been at DC since 2008. He also was an assistant men's coach at Cedarville University.
Former DC boys basketball coach Joshua Snyder resigned after two seasons to become the AD/women’s basketball coach at Cincinnati Christian University. He also has been an assistant women’s hoop coach at Wright State University.
Hot Hyde: Recent Hamilton grad Jake Hyde lit up the Ohio Mizuno High School Baseball All-Star games at Ohio State University in Columbus. He was named top offensive player for the green team after going 2- for-4 and belting a home run.
Just 80 recent grads were invited. Hyde will play baseball at NCAA D-III power Marietta.
