It will be sunny but dangerously hot and humid today, with temperatures 12 degrees above normal and a heat index value around 105, which prompted heat warnings and air pollution alerts.

The high temperature around 96 degrees is projected to tie or exceed the record of 96 degrees set in 1994 for June 15, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington.

This is a Heat Advisory in effect through 8 p.m. on Thursday. During the advisory, heat index values of up to 104 degrees are expected.

The NWS said to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room out of the sun, check on relatives and neighbors, and take extra precautions if working or spending time outside. Young children and pets shouldn’t be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.

An Air Quality Alert is in effect for Butler, Clark, Darke, Greene, Miami, Montgomery, Preble and Warren counties. Conditions are favorable for ground-level ozone, or smog, to form. This can lead to an air pollution level above 101, which is “unhealthy for sensitive groups” including older adults, children and anyone with respiratory or cardiac diseases, according to the Regional Air Pollution Control Agency and Southwest Ohio Air Quality Agency.

Residents are asked to avoid using gasoline-powered machines and to not mow lawns and refuel vehicles before 8 p.m.

Temperatures overnight won’t be much relief, with lows only falling to around 76 degrees.

It again will be hot Thursday, with a high near 93 degrees and heat index values as high as 102. It also will be windy, with some gusts around 25 mph. Thunderstorms also are expected, with some potentially strong to severe with damaging wind and hail.

Friday will be mostly sunny and hot, with breezy winds in the afternoon and a high near 88 degrees. Friday night will be mostly clear with a low around 61 degrees.

The heat will break at the end of the week when a cooler, less humid airmass arrives for the weekend.

Saturday will be sunny with a high near 80 degrees.

Sunday, which is Father’s Day and Juneteenth, will be mostly sunny with a high near 82 degrees.
