Heat makes Shelby County Fair setup slow going

Setting up the Shelby County Fair is purposely slow going and that’s because of the excessive heat in the region.

Early Thursday afternoon, 60 to 70 people at the county fairgrounds in Sidney were working at a slower pace, drinking plenty of water and waiting until later in the day to set up tents, stands and other equipment in preparation for the fair, which begins Sunday, July 21..

“The heat is what it is and most people know to just slow down and take it easy,” said Fair Board Secretary Jerry Schaffner. “We have had no heat-related incidents.”

Schaffner said that swine will be moved in late Friday overnight into Saturday morning to reduce heat issues. The only other animals on the grounds are riding horses kept there year-round. Veterinarians will be on site during the fair.

The fair continues through Saturday, July 27.
