Born in Detroit, Michigan to Irish immigrants, Ryan learned to appreciate and study the craftsmanship of classic Irish songs through her parents, who were also musicians. But she would develop her gift for storytelling under the tutelage of her father in particular. Constant summer trips to Ireland also kept the culture of her family’s homeland firmly ingrained in Ryan as she developed as a musician.

Ryan joined the all-female Irish folk group Cherish The Ladies as their lead singer in 1987 before moving on to start her solo career. Since then, she has produced five albums and appeared as a guest musician on three others.
The Winter’s Heart: An Irish American Christmas tour brings Ryan back to the Miami Valley area, where she has been a favorite since the days of the late Cityfolk Festivals.
“We all miss Cityfolk and the diverse programming they brought to Dayton,” said the event’s organizer, and former Cityfolk member, Sunni Russo.
“Cathie performed here during the Cityfolk Festival and was also a part of the Cityfolk Celtic Series. When I heard that she was planning her first Christmas tour, it seemed the perfect opportunity to bring her back to the area. Her shows are such a joy, she has a great personality that shines through on stage. She has a beautiful voice, and she's a great storyteller,” Russo added.
