🍺Best Craft Beer Selection

WINNER: Ollie’s Place

Ollie's Place is a restaurant and pub known primarily as a beer and bourbon destination. The craft beer selection is pretty robust with more than 60 taps. Check out the beer selection here for yourself!

The restaurant, tap room and whiskey bar along Miamisburg-Centerville Road, between Centerville and the Dayton Mall, has been working hard to overhaul the pub’s food-service operation. Ollie’s Place holds wine and whiskey tastings, and head chef Rashan Williams offers special menus for wine dinners, utilizing beer and bourbon in sauces and preparations in each of the five courses.

The beer will be tapped on Thursday, April 23rd at 5pm and will include the El Meson restaurant’s Food Truck providing food for the tapping party. Tres Carnales will be available in draught only and will be available for sale to bars, restaurants and limited retail outlets on Monday, April 27th. JIM WITMER/STAFF

SECOND PLACE: Warped Wing Brewing Company

Warped Wing brewery, named after the Wright brothers’ “wing warping,” is a craft brewery in Dayton who crafts and cans lagers, IPA’s, ales, stouts and more at their Wyandot Street location. This local favorite is often seen supporting festivals, and even has an in-house restaurant, Spent Grain Grill. Their small plate items feature beer-infused flavors and spent grain ingredients from beer production.

Java Man Cometh Coffee Stout “has become synonymous with DBC,” said brewery founder Pete Hilgeman. “It has won four awards across three different competitions and is an all-around unique coffee stout.” Hilgeman described it as “packed full of chocolate, caramel, and slight raisin flavors.” It’s brewed with Highlander Grogg coffee beans. THIRD PLACE: Dayton Beer Company

DBC’s Kettering location opened in May 2012, the first in a wave of nearly a dozen Dayton-area breweries that would open over the next couple of years. It opened its much larger production brewery and taproom in downtown Dayton in April 2015, and started canning beers for retail sale soon thereafter.

Their taproom, located just steps from Fifth Third Field, features 36 Ohio craft taps, as well as wine and Coca-Cola products.

Hairless Hare's “Rye the Hell Knot” started out as one of the founder’s home brews. “It became a hit from Day 1, and we have brewed this beer regularly since our opening in November 2013,” said co-founder Mike Legg. “When we run out, and we occasionally do, our patrons are quick to ask about its return.” JIM WITMER/CONTRIBUTING PHOTOGRAPHER

SECOND PLACE: Hairless Hare Brewery

Hairless Hare may not be located directly in Dayton, but has become a staple in the Gem City. Founded in 2013, the brewery crafts numerous beer concoctions in-house. From blonde ale to chocolate stout, these guys have it all. They even have an ‘ugly mug’ VIP Hare Club (ask your bartender during your next visit). Brewmaster Jeffrey McElfresh didn’t hesitate when asked: “Our signature beer is Captain Stardust Saison. It was in the lineup of first beers when Yellow Springs Brewery opened our doors in 2013 and quickly became the best-seller, holding that title to this day. The unique harmony of simplicity and grace make saison a style that stands the test of time here at the brewery.” JIM WITMER/CONTRIBUTING PHOTOGRAPHER

THIRD PLACE: Yellow Springs Brewery

This full-service brewery serves local businesses, offers retail and even has a bar set up in-house. Husband-wife duo of Nate Cornett and Lisa Wolters grew from their craft from home to a microbrewery in 2013. In the summer of 2015, the brewery doubled in capacity from a 7-barrel to a 15-barrel brewhouse. A few of their iconic brews include Captain Stardust, Zoetic and Wobbly Wheel (seasonal.)
