Cleveland Browns take Ohio State’s Tommy Togiai in NFL Draft

The Cleveland Browns were the first team to pick an Ohio State player on the last day of the NFL Draft.

They chose Tommy Togiai with the 27th pick of the fourth round, making the nose tackle the 132nd overall choice.

He is the 35th player from Ohio State chosen by the Browns, who have draft more Buckeyes than any other franchise — but not so many lately.

Denzel Ward, the No. 4 pick in the 2018 draft, was the only Ohio State player Cleveland took in the last decade, and Togiai is only the fourth since the turn of the century.

Prior to Ward, the Browns picked Brian Robiskie in the second round in 2009, and they picked Darnell Sanders in the fourth round in 2002.

In the fifth round, tight end Luke Farrell was selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars, who are now coached by former Ohio State coach Urban Meyer.

Farrell is only the third Buckeye to be drafted by the Jags, who took defensive tackle DaVon Hamilton last year in the third round and chose Centerville High School grad Michael Bennett in the sixth round in 2015.

Another team that rarely choose players from Ohio State did so later in the fifth round when the Ravens chose defensive back Shaun Wade with the 160th overall pick.

Wade, who was named an All-American cornerback despite struggling in multiple games and later revealing he battled injuries during the season, is the fifth player chosen by the franchise since it move to Baltimore in 1996.

Two of those picks came last year (J.K. Dobbins and Malik Harrison) with the others coming in 2013 (John Simon) and 2007 (Troy Smith).

In the seventh round, the Broncos took Jonathon Cooper with the 239th overall pick.

Cooper was a five-star prospect coming out of high school in central Ohio who was held back by injuries early in his career.

The Gahanna Lincoln graduate ended up being a two-time captain who logged 10 sacks and 15 tackles for loss.

Seven Buckeyes were taken in the first two days of the draft.

Justin Fields went No. 11 overall to the Chicago Bears, Pete Werner was chosen by the New Orleans Saints with the 28th pick in the second round followed by Myers.

The Minnesota Vikings picked Wyatt Davis 23rd in the third round, the San Francisco 49ers took Trey Sermon two picks later and Baron Browning went to the Denver Broncos with the last pick of the third round.
