The July 10 incident caused no injuries, the paper producer said. Portions of the mill returned to partial production July 12 and continued to operate while repairs were under way.
The mill at 1030 W. Alex-Bell Road employs just over 400 workers. No one lost employment permanently or temporarily as a result of the situation, said Bill Van Den Brandt, an Appleton spokesman.
“It was a legendary recovery on the part of the mill and the company in general, in the sense that everyone pulled together,” Van Den Brandt said.
Appleton temporarily shifted production of some of its carbonless and thermal paper products from the West Carrollton mill to manufacturing facilities in Appleton, Wis., and Roaring Spring, Pa., to minimize the impact of the incident on its customers.
The mill has had problems in the past. In July 2009, a 39-year-old worker died after being trapped beneath a 5-ton piece of equipment. Also that month, part of a building facade at the mill collapsed, an incident in which no one was hurt.
