Bike rentals join businesses in renovated building

When a visitor to downtown Tipp City asked business owner Becky Peura where she could rent a bike, Peura had to improvise.

With no rental offered, she headed home and brought her personal bicycle for the woman to borrow.

That experience in 2013 led to a new business opening this month in the Dungan Building at 42 S. Second St.

Becky’s Bike Rentals “is another option to offer people something to do,” Peura said. Some may choose to ride around the downtown and historic area while others may hop onto the bike path that runs just east of downtown and take a ride to Troy, she said.

The bike rentals joins Peura’s Crossroads Consignments and building owner Debbie Dungan’s Broadway Hair Studio and Co. in the former Town and Country Market building.

Dungan and her husband, Mike, bought the former grocery store and renovated the building three and a half years ago after the market closed because of financial difficulties.

“This building four years ago was not drawing people downtown,” Dungan said. “We dealt with issues (with the building) one by one. I think a lot of people thought, ‘They must have lost their minds.’”

The work yet to be done includes adding building awnings and parking lot upgrades.

“We have a very productive business,” Dungan said of the salon with 12 hairdressers and other staff.

Since the addition of the consignment shop, Dungan has joined forces with Peura to build their businesses and bring renewed life to the entire building located at the end of the first block south of Main Street.

Crossroads moved into the building about a year after its reopening with Peura and then business partner Michael Miller taking items for sale on consignment. Peura now owns the business, which has expanded to the third and last storefront in the Dungan Building.

The women work well together despite Dungan’s business basically drawing from local residents and Peura’s often coming from communities to the south to eat and shop downtown.

“I think we have common goals of serving the community. We want everybody to have a good experience,” Peura said.

Becky's Bike Rentals will offer bicycles by the hour, day or week. There's a tandem as well as bicycles for adults and youth. More information on rental requirements and costs is available at www.beckysbikerentals.com or by calling Crossroads Consignments at 937-506-8729 and asking about rentals.
