CarMax to open local store

CarMax Inc. said Friday, Dec. 18 it will open its $19 million West Carrollton “superstore” in 2010.

The company said it finished construction of its used car “superstore” northwest of the Interstate 75/Ohio 725 interchange. Work on the site — first announced in November 2007 — had been delayed “until market conditions improved,” the company had said.

“While difficult economic conditions persist, we have determined we are now in a position to open these stores during the first half of fiscal 2011 ,” the company said, referring to the local site and other stores whose openings have been delayed. The company also plans a new lot in the Cincinnati area.

A CarMax spokeswoman couldn’t be more precise Friday about when the local store might open.

“It could be anytime between March and August (calendar year 2010), but again, that’s just an estimate,” spokeswoman Elia Imler said.

When the development was first announced, West Carrollton city government said plans submitted for the site called for the 15-acre lot to have up to 120 employees working at an average salary of $44,000.

On Friday, Imler said 75 to 125 employees is a “good range.” She would not comment on salaries.

The site was once occupied by a Ramada Inn. Chuck George Interstate Ford abandoned plans for its own dealership at the site in late 2006.

CarMax already has two stores in the Columbus area.

Also Friday, CarMax reported net income of $74.6 million for the third quarter of its fiscal year 2010 , well above a net loss of nearly $22 million in the same quarter in its last fiscal year.
