Your BBB advises homeowners take time to choose contractors they can trust. Whether you’re looking to fix a leak or prior water damage, which has caused mold to form, your BBB recommends a few tips for finding a trustworthy contractor:
• Consider a company’s reputation and years of service.
• Shop around and get several quotes. Don’t settle for the lowest bid.
• Check with family and friends. If they’re happy with a company they used, most likely you’ll be too.
• Get a written contract, detailing of all the work to be completed. Don’t sign anything until all blanks are completed. Get verbal promises in writing. And, make sure warranties and guarantees are covered in the contract.
• Never pay up front. A legitimate, trustworthy company won’t do business that way.
• Make sure the company is licensed, bonded and insured as appropriate.
• Ask questions. Don’t be afraid to inquire about something you don’t understand.
In addition, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says there’s no way to completely remove all molds and mold spores. Mold can grow on just about any material or item as long as there is moisture. The EPA recommends keeping your home dry and to control moisture, fix any water leaks, avoid laying carpet where moisture is constantly present and use humidifiers and air conditioners especially in hot and humid areas.
