Cox to publish Wright-Patterson’s Skywrighter newspaper

WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE — Cox Media Group Ohio has been awarded an Air Force contract to take over publication and distribution of Wright-Patterson’s base newspaper, the weekly Skywrighter.

The Air Force awarded a two-year contract that can be renewed for four additional one-year options, said John Klemack, spokesman for the 88th Air Base Wing, Wright-Patterson’s host wing. The paper is published on Friday 50 weeks a year.

Cox’s first issue of the Skywrighter will be Oct. 8, said Andy Blizzard, vice president, publishing sales, for Cox Media Group Ohio.

Under the contract, Cox will earn revenue only from sales of advertising in the Skywrighter, Klemack wrote in an e-mail response Friday to questions from the Dayton Daily News, which is also part of Cox Media Group Ohio.

“The Air Force retains exclusive control over all contents,” Klemack wrote. “The focus is on Wright-Patt and base-related local news, as well as overall Air Force news, stories and features.”

The Skywrighter will be handled by Cox’s marketing publications unit, which is separate and distinct from the newsroom of the Dayton Daily News.

The company will have personnel at the base to work with the 88th Air Base Wing’s public affairs office to publish the Skywrighter, Blizzard said.

Cox plans to convert the Skywrighter to a broadsheet publication from its current tabloid format, Blizzard said. The company’s priorities include on-time delivery to military housing units and rack locations, he said.

Brown Publishing Co. has held the Skywrighter contract for more than a decade, Klemack said.

The Air Force declined to say whether there were other bidders for the contract, or identify any of them.

A telephone message seeking comment was left Friday for Joel Dempsey, a vice president of Brown Publishing.
