Don’t let duct cleaners clean out your wallet

With the growing concern of home air quality, more companies are offering air duct cleaning. Unfortunately, some companies are only out to clean your wallet, not your air ducts.

Air duct companies place ads in newspapers or send them by mail offering low prices, ranging from $59.95 to $99.95. Once they’re in your home, many use bait and switch tactics, claiming you need more services than advertised and charging higher prices. Or, you’ll pay for services that were never performed.

If you’re considering having your air ducts cleaned, your Better Business Bureau offers some advice to help you find a trustworthy company:

• Steer clear of companies recommending duct cleaning as a routine part of heating and cooling maintenance. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends air ducts be cleaned on an as-needed basis.

• Understand dust mites don’t live in duct work.

• Request written estimates from three companies based on similar specifications.

• Find out how long companies have been in business and check references.

• Make sure companies are insured and members of the National Air Duct Cleaners Association (www.nadca.com) with certification to do HVAC system cleaning.

• Ask if the company will clean the complete system, including coils and fans.

• Don’t allow the use of chemical biocides or treatments unless you fully understand the pros and cons.

• Know air duct cleaning on average runs upwards of $1,000 per heating and cooling system depending on the services, size of the system and contamination level.

• Contact your BBB for a list of Accredited Businesses specializing in air duct cleaning or check on ones you’re considering. Visit www.bbb.org or call (937) 222-5825 or (800) 776-5301.
