Finding a contractor for spring fix-ups

Whether you’re looking to spruce up your yard or tackle a minor or major repair to your house. Spring is when many people begin to get their homes and yards ready for the summer. Your Better Business Bureau says this is a great opportunity for scammers to emerge.

In 2012, the home improvement was the single most inquired about industry at your BBB locally. Since 2011, inquiries about these contractors increased nearly 10 percent, rising from nearly 44,000 in 2011 to more than 47,000 in 2012. In that span, your BBB also saw a 14 percent increase in complaints regarding this industry locally.

Your BBB advises homeowners take time to choose contractors they can trust. Whether you’re looking to get a roof replaced, kitchen remodeled or some landscaping work, your BBB recommends a few tips for finding a trustworthy contractor.

• Consider a company’s reputation and years of service.

• Shop around and get several quotes. Don’t settle for the lowest bid.

• Check with family and friends. If they’re happy with a company they used, most likely you’ll be too.

• Get a written contract with details of all the work to be completed. Don’t sign anything until all blanks are completed. Get verbal promises in writing. And, make sure warranties and guarantees are covered in the contract.

• Never pay for the entire job up front. A legitimate, trustworthy company won’t do business that way.

• Make sure the company is licensed, bonded and insured as appropriate.

• Ask questions. Don’t be afraid to inquire about something if you don’t understand.

Be wary of a scammer posing as a company coming to your door uninvited. He or she may try to tell you about a problem they’ve noticed with your home. The scammer may say he or she has leftover material from another job and can do work for you at an unbelievably low price.
