Hiring a trustworthy sign company

John North is president of the Dayton Better Business Bureau.

Signage can be needed personally or professionally. It’s used for a variety of reasons: business events, advertising family reunions, neighborhood garage sales and more. Whether you’re looking for small, large, indoor or outdoor signs, sometimes it’s best to hire a professional. Your Better Business Bureau says do your research before hiring a sign company.

Most sign companies offer a variety of services dependent on your needs, including design, manufacturing, installation, retrofitting, etc. They also offer many different shapes and sizes, materials and lighting features. Remember, if you’re looking for a sign to last, consider the type of material used in making it.

Last year, more than 2.4 million inquiries and about 400 complaints were made to BBBs across the US and Canada about sign companies. Locally, more than 1,000 inquiries were reported about this industry.

Your BBB offers tips for finding a reputable sign company for your simple to complex signage needs:

• Consider a sign company’s reputation and years of service.

• Shop around and get several quotes. Don’t settle for the lowest bid.

• Find a sign company that specializes in the type of sign you’re looking for.

• Get recommendations from others.

• Ask the company to offer input, ideas and design suggestions. A reputable company will be happy to do so.

• Ask to see the sign in the middle of the fabrication process for complex signs. A trustworthy sign company will be happy to accommodate you.

• Get a written contract, detailing the work to be completed, timeline and warranty. Don’t sign anything until all blanks are completed.

• Check to see if the company employs professional, certified designers, which have adequate training and knowledge about the industry. Also, find out if subcontractors will be used and check them.

• Determine if the company belongs to a professional association like the International Sign Association.

• Never pay upfront. A legitimate, trustworthy company won’t do business that way.

• Make sure the company is licensed, bonded and insured as appropriate.

• Don’t be afraid to ask about previous jobs. Inquire about anything if you don’t understand.

Remember, whether you’re making a temporary or permanent sign, check with your local city’s ordinance, you may need a permit.
