IKEA expands contract with Ohio supplier

Swedish retailer IKEA has grown its contract with an Ohio supplier to make more furniture products for the company’s U.S. stores.

Sauder Woodworking Co. of Archbold, Ohio, has manufactured kitchen cabinets for IKEA U.S. since 2007. Under terms of a new five-year contract announced Tuesday, Sauder Woodworking will now produce bedroom furniture, office, entertainment and children’s storage furniture in addition to kitchen cabinets for the home furnishings retailer.

Thanks to the new business deal, Sauder expects to add at least 150 new jobs, and invest more than $13 million in new equipment.

IKEA operates 38 U.S. stores including one in West Chester Twp. off Interstate 75 in Butler County.

“With our planned growth in the US, we are looking to expand our manufacturing base here, so that we can deliver our products economically and sustainably,” Rob Olson, chief financial officer of IKEA U.S., said in a statement.

IKEA is opening three new stores in 2014 and 2015 in Miami, Fla.; Merriam, Ks.; and St. Louis, Miss.
