Macy’s reports 9 percent sales increase for June

CINCINNATI — Macy’s Inc. reported sales of $2.23 billion for the five weeks ended July 3, a 9 percent increase from $2.04 billion in the same period a year ago.

At stores open for at least a year, sales were up by 6.5 percent in June, the retailer reported on Thursday, July 8.

Macy’s officials said they expect those same-store sales for the second quarter to increase by 4.5 percent from last year, and to be up by 3 to 3.5 percent for all of 2010. Online sales, which increased by 37.6 percent in June from a year earlier, are included in the same-store sales calculation.

For the year to date, Macy’s sales totaled $9.59 billion, up by 6.7 percent from $8.99 billion for the same period in 2009. The same-store sales increase was 4.9 percent, Macy’s said.

The company operates about 850 department stores nationwide, including Macy’s stores at Dayton Mall and the Mall at Fairfield Commons. Its nameplates include Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s. The retailer also sells through the macys.com and bloomingdales.com Web sites.

Sales for the company’s most recent fiscal year totaled $23.5 billion.
