NCR spinoff company paints a picture of growth

Teradatais approaching $2 billion in revenue and finds plenty of local talent, COO says.

DAYTON — Growing, growing fast and growing here.

That was the portrait Bruce Langos, Teradata Corp. chief operating officer, presented Dayton Rotarians on Monday, Aug. 2, at a Sinclair Community College luncheon.

The Miami Twp.-based data enterprise and analytics company — which plans to move to a new home near the new Austin Pike interchange — is approaching $2 billion in revenue and counts among its customers 100 percent of the world global tele-communication firms, 83 percent of the world’s top transportation/logistics firms and 66 percent of the top global airlines, Langos said.

The former NCR executive presented a picture of a company that in some ways has outgrown its former parent. Spun off from NCR in the fall of 2007, Teradata has nearly 925 customers and 6,400 employees in 2,400 installations worldwide. Today, the total value of all of Teradata’s outstanding shares, $5.5 billion, is double that of NCR’s at $2.25 billion.

“We typically don’t sell anything for less than a million dollars, traditionally,” Langos said, adding to laughter: “Which is great.”

Derrick Wood, who follows Teradata for Wedbush Securities, agreed that the company is in a “good space.”

“And data management is growing very nicely just because of the explosion in data volumes,” Wood said.

However, he cautioned that the field is growing more competitive, with Oracle, Hewlett Packard, IBM and others making moves.

This summer, NCR completed moving its headquarters from Dayton to Duluth, Ga. While Langos lamented the move, he also said it was time for the community to move on.

“In retrospect, it (spinning off Teradata from NCR) was a good idea. We’re still sitting here in Dayton, Ohio. And we’re doing well,” Langos said to applause.

Prompted by an audience member, Langos countered a complaint that Bill Nuti, NCR chief executive, offered when the company announced its move from Dayton. He said Teradata finds it “relatively easy” to recruit to the Dayton area, where the company has some 400 employees.

“These were some of the most talented people I have ever worked with,” Langos said of former colleagues with NCR.
