New cafe and tea room opens in Belmont

A cafe and tea shop called Communitea Cafe has opened at 100 Watervliet Ave. in the Belmont neighborhood of Dayton.

The cafe is owned and operated by Dawn Thomas, a Dayton resident and 1975 graduate of Belmont High School.

Communitea seats 30 in a building that originally housed a neighborhood grocery store, later a ceramic shop and most recently an antique store. The cafe serves a variety of soups, salads and cold sandwiches, as well as house-made scones with house-made three-berry jam and hot teas, Thomas said. The space is available for special events such as birthday parties, wedding and bridal showers, and high tea service.

Customers “can come in for lunch, they can come in for dessert, or they can come in for a cup of tea,” Thomas said.

A licensed real-estate agent for 17 years, Thomas said she has been looking to open a community-minded business when she settled on a lunch cafe and tea room.

Hours are 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. For more information, call (937) 554-5626 or check out the Communitea Cafe Facebook page at www.facebook.com/dawnscommunitea.
