New e-cigarette retailer planning up to 10 shops by year’s end

Mojo Vapes, a new entry in the increasingly competitive e-cigarette market, will open its first vapor shop in Huber Heights next week, and will follow with new stores in Springfield, the Mason-West Chester area and the Centerville-Miami Twp. area, according to co-founder Andy Morgan.

The 1,800-square-foot Huber Heights store is located at 6076 Chambersburg Road, in the same Huber Center as a state motor-vehicles bureau. The shop is scheduled to open April 5 and will employ eight, Morgan said.

Morgan said he is close to signing a lease for a shop near the Dayton Mall and expects to open a shop there in May. The retailer’s next shops will likely be in the Mason-West Chester area, and Morgan said he is looking for a suitable location in Springfield. The Mojo Vapes co-founder said he hopes to open a total of seven to 10 such retail shops in the region before the end of the year.

E-cigarettes are battery-operated devices that heat liquid nicotine and flavors into a vapor that the user inhales. Mojo Vapes makes more than 50 flavors of its own “e-juice” and will stock several styles of the e-cigarette hardware.

Morgan, who also owns Vantage Land Title in Vandalia, said he was motivated to open the shops in part to help smokers to quit tobacco cigarettes. Morgan co-owns Mojo Vapes with his two sons, Collin and Clay, and with Alex McWhirter, all of Vandalia. The founders are among several entrepreneurs opening e-cigarette “vapor shops” in the region.

In late November, the Vapor Haus opened in the Belmont neighborhood of Dayton. Another e-cigarette retailer, JoJo Vapes in Vandalia, opened a second store in Brookville last month, and is planning to open additional shops in Springfield, Troy and Huber Heights. VaporCast, which opened its first shop in Centerville in late 2012, has opened new stores in Mason and in Cleveland, and is eyeing expansion to Huber Heights, Troy, Xenia and Dayton.

The industry faces the possibility of regulation from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which is expected to announce restrictions to advertising, sales to minors and perhaps a limitation on “e-juice” flavors.

The Huber Heights Mojo Vapes’ hours will be 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday, noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. For more information about the Huber Heights store, call (937) 877-5020.
