New owners to open Tipp City grocery store

A new grocery is coming to Tipp City in the former location of Foodtown, whose closing in early October stripped the southern Miami County community of its only full-service store.

The owners of La Plaza Tapatia International Fresh Market hope to have the new grocery open by year’s end, said Daniel and Nancy Delgado.

They are Tipp City residents who are working with Gustavo Salazar of the La Plaza Tapatia International Fresh Market in Columbus. That business opened in 2004 and he is “very excited” to help open a store in Tipp City, Salazar said.

The store will be in the former Foodtown home in the Tipp Plaza Shopping Center south of Main Street and east of Interstate 75. Equipment in the building was purchased earlier this month from Jim Davis, who owned the Tipp City Foodtown as well as those in Dayton, Trotwood and Sidney. The Trotwood location also was closed this fall.

Work is underway establishing new produce, bakery and meat departments at the Tipp City location.

The store “is going to be like it used to be but with more Hispanic and other international selections,” Nancy Delgado said. “It will be a little bit of everything.”

Work was underway last week cleaning and painting the space in preparation for stocking the store.

Tipp City leaders held a community forum in September discussing possible options for replacing Foodtown. City Manager Tim Eggleston said then that the city had contacted eight grocery chains to see if there would be interested in considering a Tipp City location. Some said they would share the inquiry with their real estate and site selection staff.

“The city is excited to see that someone has taken interest in the space and expanding on the product line,” Eggleston said. “Our hope is that the community will support this business by shopping locally.”
