New winery poised to open in Miami County

UNION TWP., Miami County — The new winery called Old Mason Winery & Vineyard has set an opening date of April 22.

The region’s newest winery — which its owners initially named “Naked Grape Winery” but later changed the name due to trademark concerns — is located at 4199 Iddings Road near West Milton. The opening of Old Mason comes just three months after Caesar Creek Vineyards opened in eastern Greene County.

The two new wineries join Brandeberry Winery in Clark County near Yellow Springs, Valley Vineyards near Morrow in Warren County, The Winery at Versailles in Darke County, Hanover Winery in Hanover Twp. in Butler County, and Bent Tree Winery in Mason among the Miami Valley’s licensed wineries.

Old Mason will offer at least five wines for sampling, including a dry Riesling, a sweet Riesling, a Niagara, a Cayuga wine called “Sunlight,” and a red/white blend called “Statesman,” according to Chuck Compton of Tipp City, who owns the winery with his wife Sherry and a second couple, Jeff and Donna Clark of Arcanum.

At least four more wines — Concord grape, peach, apple and raspberry — are on the way, Compton said.

Old Mason’s current offerings are made from purchased grape and fruit juice, but the winery planted about 2,300 grapevines on the grounds of the Miami County winery three years ago. Those vines will produce a usable harvest in the coming years, allowing Old Mason to begin producing estate-grown wines.

The Old Mason tasting room’s hours will be Monday through Thursday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., closed Sunday. For more information, call (937) 698-1122.
