New wings restaurant in Piqua may pave the way for others

PIQUA —A new Buffalo Wings & Rings restaurant may pave the way for additional development around the Miami Valley Centre Mall and may be the first of multiple Buffalo Wings & Rings in the region, Piqua city officials and the franchise owner said Wednesday.

A groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for 10 a.m. today for a Buffalo Wings & Rings restaurant at 989 E. Ash St. in front of the Miami Valley Centre Mall. A former Aldi’s store that had been vacant for several years was demolished two weeks ago to make way for the new restaurant, according to Bill Murphy, assistant city manager and economic development director for the city of Piqua.

“This gives us a shot in the arm for retail and restaurant recruitment efforts,” Murphy said. “We hope this is the first of many sit-down restaurants and other retailers that take a look at our community.”

The restaurant will be the fifth in the region for the Cincinnati-based Buffalo Wings & Rings, and the first for franchise owners Todd and Audra Fetter of Waynesfield, near Lima.

Todd Fetter said he hopes to open more of the wings-and-sports restaurants in the region, but has not identified sites. The new Piqua restaurant will open around Feb. 1 and will employ 30 to 40 people, Fetter said.

The franchisee said he will invest more than $100,000 in entertainment technology alone in the new Piqua restaurant, including multiple large-screen televisions and entertainment systems. “We’re not going to skimp on that,” Fetter said.

Buffalo Wings & Rings was founded in 1984 and operates more than 50 restaurants across the U.S., including locations in Centerville, Lebanon, Monroe and Fairfield, according to the company’s website. The restaurants’ menu includes wings, burgers, gyros, wraps, salads, sandwiches and quesadillas.
