If you are like me, last weekend’s official start to spring was a pleasant milestone as winter officially ended. Although I thoroughly enjoy cold weather and all the fun snow brings, I adore the spring months. It is always lovely to see trees regaining their leaves, lawns turning green once again and flowers beginning to push their way to the surface.
As many might, I see spring as a season of new beginnings and a flurry of activity to make the additional daylight hours more productive. For me, it is especially true this year. I moved to Ohio and started as the executive director for the Home Builders Association of Dayton almost 10 months ago. The area and the industry – residential construction – were completely new to me, and I spent several months learning about all facets of home building and meeting countless new faces while trying to help grow and improve the Home Builders Association of Dayton. The timing of my arrival happened during the association’s signature home show, the Homearama Touring Edition, so labeling that time as “chaotic” is an understatement.
Before accepting a position with the Home Builders Association of Dayton, I worked for the Pittsburgh Penguins, a National Hockey League team. I am used to an intense work pace after working in professional sports for more than 12 years in community relations and marketing. I thrive when working under pressure, so after gaining my bearings and learning about the home building industry, I have found the adjustment to be overwhelmingly positive.
I was fortunate to have a great support system within this association from the Board of Directors of the Home Builders Association of Dayton, the members who make up the association, elected officials, city and county people in countless areas, business and community leaders throughout the region and certainly my predecessor, Walt Hibner.
Each member or friend of the association has been patient, kind and always willing to share their knowledge and experience. It was – and still is – a great help to have assistance from so many good people. It is also reassuring that I do not need to be an expert on any and all things within the residential construction industry because I know many people who are fantastic resources within their facet of the industry or can guide me to a person who is.
Don’t count me as an expert in home building by any stretch, but I continue to learn more each day, and it is very likely that I know someone who is an expert and belongs to the Home Builders Association of Dayton. No matter what your housing need might be, the professionals who make up the association are here to help.
