Owners of the French Country home at 1877 Sugar Maple Place in Bellbrook gained an appreciation of European architectural styles during their travels.

“We loved the Italian and French Country houses, so we always wanted to build one and make it as authentic as possible,” said one owner. “Of course, we wanted all the modern conveniences, too.”

A custom builder and contracted artisans created this distinctive home in about eight months.

“The entire house is stone – five-inch thick Kentucky blue stone,” said one owner. “There were three teams of masons here for five months.”

The co-owner added, “It was like watching artists.”

Completed in 2012, the ranch home with a finished walkout lower level offers more than 6,100 square feet of living space.

Tony Johnson of Coldwell Banker Heritage Realtors lists this home for $1.2 million.

An arched transom follows the curved lines of the double-door entrance. Hand-scraped hickory flooring adds warmth in the entry and the main gathering areas.

Wide, fluted casings frame the opening into the dining room, which is accented by a tray ceiling with double crown moldings around a center covered to suggest slate.

French doors open into the library embellished with ivory-hued, floor-to-ceiling bookcases and a tray ceiling.

Four wide, tall windows naturally draw visitors into the open great room to enjoy the wooded view while sitting before the stone fireplace with its soapstone hearth and custom-designed mantel.

“The scenery in the back never gets old – it’s like a picture, and every season is beautiful,” one owner said.

Thick ceiling beams are softened with rounded corners and painted to match walls. Custom built-ins flank the fireplace providing a wide art niche on one side and TV hookups on the other.

In the open kitchen an oversized center island attracts attention with its all-one-piece granite countertop.

The well-lighted work area features onyx-covered backsplashes above a six-burner gas range with a central griddle and two ovens. Hand-carved corbels accent the wood trim around the vent.

The built-in refrigerator shares a large alcove with a custom-built-in hutch, which was designed to resemble a piece of furniture. It incorporates wine rack, bread drawer and cabinets with rollout shelves.

“All cabinetry in the house is Amish-built,” said a co-owner. Nearby is a walk-in pantry.

The all-season room has a brick floor and an angled brick wall for the fireplace with a wood mantel carved from trees found on the property. An accent wall in Kentucky blue stone holds a built-in grill with a hooded vent. Pella casement windows surround the room, which connects to a paver patio.

The split-bedroom floor plan places the main bedroom suite in a private area. A double tray ceiling with crown moldings at each tier accents the bedroom.

An archway leads into the bath, where the freestanding soaking tub sits under two sets of windows. Marble tile covers the floor, lower walls and the entire step-in shower, where it has a diagonal pattern with miniature-tile borders. Matching marble tops the double vanity.

The customized walk-in closet provides a dressing area with varying sized hanging spaces, compartments and a built-in bureau.

Two bedrooms on the opposite side of the gathering area flank a central bath with separate vanity rooms.

The fourth bedroom is on the lower level near a full bath and the exercise room. The open recreation room has an elaborate wet bar/kitchen and bar seating at a center island topped with Brazilian marble. Cabinets and counter are flanked by Brazilian wood wine racks designed after restaurant wine racks owners saw in Cortona, Italy.

A sitting area is arranged around the stacked-stone fireplace. Double doors open to another paver patio.

Wainscoting enhances the media room, which benefits from tiered theater seating, a large screen and an overhead projector.

A versatile extra room is used as an office. Unfinished basement rooms wrap around the gathering areas providing abundant storage space.
