The Washington, D.C.-based group also identified the coal-fired J.M Stuart power plant operated by the Dayton Power and Light Co. as the second-most prolific producer of carbon dioxide in the state and the 25th largest producer of the gas among all power plants in the nation.
Another Ohio power plant, the General James M. Gavin plant operated by Ohio Power Co., ranked first in the state and 7th in the nation, the group said.
The 100 “dirtiest” plants, the group said, were responsible for about of the total carbon dioxide emissions from the U.S. electricity sector in 2011, and more than 3 percent of the total worldwide emissions from energy use, the group said.
The group used 2011 data reported to the U.S. Department of Energy and estimates of the carbon content for each fuel source developed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to make its findings.
