There were 10,033 new entities filing to do business in Ohio last month — making January the third best month for new business creation in Ohio’s history.

Last month’s number represented an increase of 1,409 entities when compared to January 2016, according to a release from the Ohio secretary of state’s office.

This makes only the third time that the number of new business filings received in a single month has surpassed 10,000, the office said. The first time was in March 2015 and the second March 2016.

Last year was the seventh straight year the state has seen a record number of new entities filing to do business in Ohio. In 2016, 105,009 new businesses registered with the Secretary of State’s office, surpassing the previous record set in 2015 of 97,746 new entities by 7,263 businesses.

In all, Ohio has seen a rise of 30.1 percent in filings from 2010 to 2016, according to the state.

The secretary of state’s office is an early regulatory stop when entrepreneurs wish to file and start a business in Ohio.
