Powers served as banker and advertising manager for the company’s previous owner, Joe Fulmer, before purchasing the Centerville business and a Stitching Post store in Columbus in 2009.
Fulmer’s father, Darrell Fulmer, started the business in 1958.
Wilma McCabe, who works at the Dove’s Nest in Cross Pointe next door to The Stitching Post, said people are upset about the store’s closing.
“Customers have come in and mentioned how they are going to miss it,” McCabe said. “It’s going to leave a big hole in the community.”
The Stitching Post was once the area’s largest Husqvarna Viking sewing machine dealer, and had outlets inside JoAnn Fabrics stores.
In 2007, Joe Fulmer pleaded guilty to four federal charges related to the employment of illegal aliens.
As part of his plea agreement, he was required to forfeit all real and personal property used in the crimes.
Powers said Friday the 250,000-square-foot Stitching Post, one of the anchors of the shopping center at Alex-Bell Road and Ohio 48, will offer 70 percent off its merchandise today.
