Tanning salon choice requires some homework

The tanning salon industry rakes in billions every year. About 30 million Americans use tanning salons annually, and many will be looking for one to get that summer glow. Your Better Business Bureau can help you pick a trustworthy tanning salon.

Over the last year, your BBB recorded about 530 inquiries locally about tanning salons. Nationally, your BBB received more than 45,000 inquiries and almost 1,000 complaints about this industry.

A reputable tanning salon will have you fill out a skin analysis form, which is used to help staff determine your skin type. It should also have up-to-date equipment and employees trained on the tanning options it offers, such as UV tanning, spray, booth and air brush tanning. It should also comply with local laws regarding time in the tanning bed, time between tans, minimum ages, etc.

When choosing a tanning salon, your BBB offers these tips:

• Get recommendations from friends and family. If they’re pleased with their tanning salon, most likely you will be too.

• Visit and compare several tanning salons.

• Find out how long the company has been in business.

• Make sure the facility is licensed, carries appropriate insurance and meets local and state requirements.

• Make sure the facility is clean and well-maintained and ask how often equipment is sanitized.

• Keep location in mind. Since you will be making multiple visits, try to find one which is close to home, work or school.

• Inquire about tanning packages. Many tanning salons offer discounts on package deals.

• Discuss with staff the protective measures they suggest, such as tanning lotions, covering eyes and other sensitive body parts.

• Find out if a tanning salon is a member of an association like Indoor Tanning Association (ITA) or American Sun Tanning Association (ASA).

• Get everything in writing, including cost, number of tanning days, etc.

• Ask questions.

If you have any questions regarding tanning salons, you can always get help from your BBB, such as a list of BBB Accredited tanning salons and business reviews on ones you’re considering.
