Tax credits and jobs on line for local projects

Two area companies have planned expansions — and new jobs — on the line as the Ohio Tax Credit Authority considers tax credit proposals from across the state today.

Hartzell Air Movement Inc. in Piqua and Valued Relationships Inc. in Franklin both have proposed expansions before the Tax Credit Authority.

VRI, formerly of West Carrollton, wants to add at least 125 jobs over the next three years to the 140 it already has, mainly in Franklin. The company offers services and products — including medication dispensers, call center services and more — that help older citizens live independently.

Chris Hendriksen, VRI president, said his company is planning a partnership with a “pretty large telecom provider” to this year launch a GPS-locatable medical-alert device that would help track people not just in their homes but anywhere. The product will be launched in the second half of 2012, he said. He declined to identify the telecom provider VRI is working with on the product.

An approximately $370,000 credit over seven years will assist the launch of the new product and the hiring of employees to support it, Hendriksen said.

In Piqua, Hartzell Air Movement wants to build a 30,000-square-foot addition to its industrial fan manufacturing facility, said Michael Bardo, the company’s chief financial officer.

The company is seeking an approximately $350,000 credit over six years to help with the project, which will help meet growing demand for large, industrial fans, particularly for customers who make computer semiconductors, said Jeff Bannister, Hartzell chief executive,

Semiconducter producer “Intel is building factories worldwide on a continuous basis,” Bannister said.

Hartzell intends to add about 50 jobs to its 200 in Piqua over the next five years, Bardo said.
