Teradata completes Aster Data Systems acquisition

Teradata Corp. has completed its acquisition of Aster Data Systems, Inc., finishing its second sizeable acquisition since late December.

About a month ago, Miami Twp.-based Teradata first said it had signed a definitive agreement to acquire Aster Data Systems, a company focused on “advanced analytics and the management of a variety of diverse data.”

Aster focuses on “big data,” both structured database information and unstructured data, such as videos, social media material and more.

Teradata acquired an 11-percent ownership interest in Aster Data last September and has agreed to pay an additional $263 million for the remaining ownership interest, net of debt and other expenses, the local company said in March. Teradata expected to get $21 million in cash at closing.

In December, Teradata announced a $525 million acquisition of marketing software and cloud-computing services firm Aprimo.

“With the powerful combination of Teradata and Aster Data, customers will be able to quickly solve complex business problems by leveraging relational and new data sources and types to improve growth and drive profitability,” Mike Koehler, Teradata president and chief executive, said in a statement from the company.

Teradata will offer the Aster Data solution as a stand-alone software solution, helping customers focus on digital marketing, fraud detection, social networks and more.

Teradata has some 450 Dayton-area employees.
