John Henton misses television, where he was a weekly fixture for nearly a decade. The 52-year-old Cleveland native starred on “Living Single” with Queen Latifah and Kim Fields from 1993 to 1998 and “The Hughleys” with fellow comic D.L. Hughley from 1998 to 2002.
Henton, performing at the Funny Bone in Beavercreek on Friday through Sunday, believes he’s at the top of his game as a stand-up, but he’s itching to get back on television. He recently discussed these feelings.
TV withdrawal
“I went from one show to another. That was a great run, and I really miss it. If you get a film, that’s the ultimate, but TV is a great way to pay the bills and you can be a little creative, too. My hope is to get back on TV this year. It’s pilot season now, and I’m getting the opportunity to read for a few shows. Even if it’s a recurring character or just a guest star, it’ll make my year if I can get a couple of TV appearances.”
Work mode
“I like to think I’m growing as comedian. I try to do something for the act every day. I’m a lot more topical. I’m paying attention to the details. I’m trying to keep writing to keep the material as fresh as possible. There’s a lot of things happening, so I’m just watching the news and trying to stay informed, so I can come up with new material. It’s always easier to write when you’re working on a regular basis.”
The observer
“It’s observational humor and a lot of the bigger stories that everybody is familiar with. You’ve got a nice jump-off point, and then it’s about whichever way you go with it. Once in a while comedic minds think alike. Two people might come up with something similar, but most of the time my thoughts will be different than everybody else’s.”
