Schuster Choir celebrates 10 years
Among the groups that entertained at the Schuster Center’s community open house on Saturday was the Schuster Center Celebration Choir, one of the largest community choirs in Southwest Ohio.
The choir was formed in 2003 when local church choirs and other community singers were invited to participate in the opening celebration for the new performing arts center. They’ve been performing ever since under the sponsorship of the Victoria Theatre Association. Wyetta Hayden served as director for three years; since 2006, Linda J. Snyder has served in that capacity. Piano accompanist is Dr. Mary Fahrenbruck.
The choir has members from throughout the Miami Valley, including all areas of the city of Dayton, with representation from Montgomery, Miami, Clark, Greene and Warren counties. Members come from Englewood, Kettering, Centerville, and Huber Heights, Trotwood, West Carrollton and Vandalia.
“As musical ambassadors of Dayton, the choir sings a diverse repertoire — from sacred/gospel and patriotic selections to jazz and musical theater — and has been selected annually to sing the National Anthem for the Dayton Dragons,” Snyder said. “In addition to singing on the Mead Theatre and DP&L stages at the Schuster, the Celebration Choir has performed throughout the Dayton urban area in a variety of venues.
If you’d like more information about the choir, you can contact Karen Poe at karen@schusterchoir.org and (937) 287-1065 or Linda Snyder at (937) 229-3936 or Lsnyder1@udayton.edu.
CJ pop group will go to New York
For the first time ever in the group’s three-year history, Chaminade Julienne’s pop a cappella septet Vega has earned the right to advance to the national finals April 19 at the New York Society for Ethical Culture’s Concert Hall.
The group took the top spot at the Ohio Valley regional singing tournament held at Centerville High School on Feb. 23.
In November, Vega released its first studio album titled “Momentum,” which features nine instrumentless covers of hit songs by artists including Adele, Kelly Clarkson, Natasha Bedingfield and others. The album, available for $10 at CJ, showcases the vocal talents of current students and recent alumni members from the 2011-12 edition of the group.
