If you’ve ever dreamed about stepping onto the Mead Theater stage at the Schuster Center and showing off your talent, here’s your chance!
To mark the Schuster’s 10th anniversary year, 15 acts will be given the opportunity to “play the Schuster” on Sunday, Sept. 29. The first place winner will receive $1,000, second place received $500, third place earns $250.
Individuals or groups are being encouraged to prepare a two-minute audition and folks of all ages — but no pets — are welcome. Auditions are slated from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 10 and from noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 11.
After both auditions, the top 20 (selected by VTA staff) will be posted for limited-time online vote.

DVAC Announces Artists for 2013-2015 Seasons
The Dayton Visual Arts Center (DVAC) has just announced the list of 29 artists who will be featured in one and two-person and group exhibitions at DVAC in the 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 seasons.
For the first time in its history applications were accepted online via an app service called callforentry.org.
“It’s the No.1 industry exhibition submission website and it allows artists to submit multiple shows worldwide once they register and upload images,” explains DVAC executive director Eva Buttacavoli.
The chosen artists, who come from throughout the United States, receive a modest stipend, an original essay, a critical review and installation images of their exhibition. Buttacavoli. says DVAC has also received funding from the Ohio Arts Council to commission four of these artists to work with local university and college students to produce site-specific installations in DVAC’s storefront window.

Art scholar Cheryl Robertson Dies at 60
A Dayton native and Fairview High School and Oberlin College grad who made her mark as a nationally known museum consultant and scholar died suddenly in her Cambridge home on the weekend of July 6 and will be memorialized at the Old North Church in Boston’s historic North End on Saturday, July 27.
Cheryl Ann Robertson, an expert on the Colonial Revival and Aesthetic and Arts and Crafts Movements, most recently taught in the American and New England Studies Program at Boston University.
“She knew objects and loved ideas, and her rare ability to combine the two made her one of the leading decorative arts and architectural historians in the country,” said Marilee Meyer, a friend and colleague who issued a press release on the death. “She was huge in the American decorative art world, and an expert on Frank Lloyd Wright and she will be sorely missed.”
Robertson served as curator of American Decorative Arts at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art (Hartford, CT), Director of Exhibitions and Public Programs at the National Heritage Museum (Lexington, MA), and Curator of Decorative Arts at the Milwaukee Art Museum. She also served as Assistant Director and lecturer at Sotheby’s Institute for American Art in New York City and as an Assistant Professor in the Winterthur Program in American Culture (University of Delaware).
More recently, she taught in the American and New England Studies Program at Boston University.
Antioch Hosts Writing/Art Workshops for Veterans
On Friday, July 26, and Saturday, July 27, Antioch College will host a series of free writing and art workshops for veterans and local allies. The workshops will be facilitated by Lovella Calica, founder of Warrior Writers, an organization that fosters artistic expression through workshops and retreats for veterans.
Non-veteran allies are encouraged to participate in a ‘Working with Veterans 101’ workshop centered around building healthy relationships between service members/veterans and civilians through creative writing, art-making, dialogue, participatory learning and active listening processes.
The two-day workshops will culminate at 7:30 on Saturday evening, July 27 in the Herndon Gallery with a poetry reading by workshop participants that’s free and open to the public.
The workshops are part of a collaboration with the Herndon Gallery’s latest exhibition, Coming Home, which presents visual art and written works from recent military veterans. Musicians Sought for Giving Strings Concert
String musicians of all ages and ability levels are being invited to participate in this summer’s Giving Strings Concert. The benefit will be held on Saturday, Aug. 10 at 7 p.m. on the 200 block of Ridgewood Avenue in Oakwood.
Monies raised this year will go to Oak Tree Corner, the local center for grieving children. Dr. Patrick Reynolds, assistant conductor of the Dayton Philharmonic, will conduct. Last year over 100 musicians from throughout the Miami Valley participated in this all-volunteer orchestra.

50 Local Artists to Exhibit at Pendleton
Pendleton Art Center’s next fine art show will feature music, demonstrations, food and art and will take place from 5-9 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 2 and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 3.
