Kevin Heffernan and Steve Lemme honed their chops doing sketch comedy on stage. However, for more than a decade they were better known as part of Broken Lizard, the group behind cult films like “Super Troopers” and “Beerfest.”

Heffernan and Lemme — presenting their two-man show at the Funny Bone Comedy Club in Beavercreek on Friday and Saturday — recently discussed their return to live performance.

Back to the stage

Lemme: “We did a year-long tour across the country with all the other Broken Lizard guys during the writers’ strike in Hollywood. Kevin and I enjoyed it so much we decided we wanted to keep doing it. We started the two-man thing in early 2012, and it’s been great. We shot the ‘Fat Man and Little Boy’ special for Netflix and now we’re gearing up to shoot a new special based on this new show.”

Tag-team comedy

Heffernan: “We come out and do a bit together and we each do a set of our own. In the middle of show we’ll do a two-man story. This time I think we’re going to tell a story about the making of ‘Beerfest.’”

Lemme: “It’s an all-new show. We won’t be doing anything this time out that was seen on the special.”

Heffernan: “And people shouldn’t be afraid to come to the show if they haven’t seen the movies. We do stuff that pulls everyone in. It’s great for fans of the movies because they hear stories but we definitely make it accessible to everyone.”

Personal touch

Lemme: “I knew we had fans out there but we didn’t know how many so we were surprised at the amount of rabid Broken Lizard fans there are and the demographic is wider than I thought.”

Future projects

Heffernan: “We just finalized a deal for doing a sequel to ‘Super Troopers.’ It was kind of a long time coming. There were a lot of impediments but now everything’s been cleared up. We’ve written the script already so we’re just putting the pieces together. We’re planning to shoot this year.”

Lemme: “Kevin and I are actually working on a TV pilot with two of the other guys from Broken Lizard. Kevin and I have a podcast now on Nerdist.com called ‘Chewing It’ and we’re also working on a couple of other TV shows and films.”

Heffernan: “You’ve got to have a lot of spinning plates. It’s always hard to mount a project, so it’s always good to have a lot of things in the hopper.”
