This year’s keynoter (July 9, 7 p.m.) and Sunday Morning Creative Writing Craft instructor is Roxane Gay, renowned writer (Bad Feminist and An Untamed State, among other works), professor, literary magazine editor, blogger, and commentator, including as a contributing op-ed writer for The New York Times.
Gay’s keynote, which will be delivered at Antioch University Midwest (900 Dayton Street, Yellow Springs,) is Saturday July 9 at 7 p.m., and is free and open to the public.
Additionally, the summer program includes readings by this year’s workshop faculty. These readings are also free and open to the public, and held at 7 p.m. at Antioch University Midwest:
• Sunday, July 10: Readings by Becky Hagenston, Lee Martin, and John Philip Drury
• Monday, July 11: Readings by John Kachuba, Suzanne Harding, and Kristina McBride
• Tuesday, July 12: Readings by Melissa Grunow, Shane McCrae, Chris Tebbetts and Crystal Wilkinson
• Wednesday, July 13: Participants’ Open Mic Night
• Thursday, July 14: Readings by selected participants
The workshop is able to provide the above free events, as well as other free events throughout the year, thanks to a grant from the Ohio Arts Council.
Attendees are writers who want to learn more about the creative writing craft and make connections in the creative writing community; many are from the region, but a good percentage are from across the country (and in some years, from around the world.)
Though registration for the Full Week program is closed, those interested in attending the following programs “A La Carte” may register at www.antiochwritersworkshop.com through Wednesday July 6:
• One day “Saturday Seminar” focusing on “cross-training in the genres,” led by local authors Mindee Arnett, Matt Birdsall, Erin Flanagan, Kate Geiselman, Cyndi Pauwels, Joanne Smith, and Tim Waggoner as well as Columbus author Susan Heino.
• Creative Writing Craft session, led by Roxane Gay — Sunday, July 10, 9 a.m.-11:00 p.m. (followed by booksigning)
• Morning Only classes, which includes Roxane’s Sunday session as well as poetry, fiction, nonfiction and professional skills for writers led by a variety of faculty on Monday, July 11 – Friday, July 15, 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
• Afternoon Only “Getting Started” class, led by area author John Kachuba, which includes Roxane’s Sunday session as well as the afternoon seminar Sunday, July 10-Friday July 15, 2:00-5:30.
All of the above classes will be held at Antioch University Midwest.
Read more about these authors’ backgrounds and works in their bios on the Faculty page of the workshop’s website.
In addition to its partnership with Antioch University Midwest and grant support from the Ohio Arts Council, Antioch Writers’ Workshop receives support and sponsorship from WYSO 91.3 FM, Books & Co. at The Greene, and Yellow Springs restaurants.
And on a personal note … I hope to see you at the keynote and/or free evening readings! The Antioch Writers’ Workshop has long been a major part of my own literary life, and I hope you’ll make it part of yours, too.
